So here I am, trying to write a paper that is due yesterday, staring down barrel of an absurd amount of work, simultaneously citing sources and studying for tomorrow’s fleet of exam questions in two other classes, and once again I am filled with rage. The kind of rage even my Ritalin won’t let me ignore. And what, you might ask, am I angry at today? Well today’s frustration is in fact at my paper, reminding me of my serious problems with the shit-show that is the academic community and their demands of undergrads.
As someone who as probably passed high school in America, at some point during your education you learned a very important rule of physics. “Every action has a equal and opposite reaction”. This is a rule having to do with the movement of energy and matter in the universe, but is often used to describe any manor of event. Usually most of us realize that this Law of Physics is generally universal to life. You do something to someone (good, bad or otherwise) and they will usually respond in kind and most importantly in measure. The NYPD (New York City Police Dept. for those of you who live under a rock) decided that would attempt to flaunt that rule this past weekend when they grossly over reacted to an otherwise peaceful event.
I definitely don’t agree with everything in this (you know I’m a couple miles to your left) but I most certainly concur that the NYPD screwed the proverbial pooch on this one. It is interesting to note however that while the posted picture denotes blue shirt police grunts hauling a guy a way, in most of the videos I’ve seen, including the one of the girls being maced, the assaulting officer was not a blue shirt but a white shirt, denoting the rank of lieutenant or higher. Still, for those “To Protect and Maim” blue shirts the line “I was just following orders” is a paltry defense.
